Xmas Tree Ornament (3D Printing)

I love everything in the Xmas time, especially the beautiful Xmas tree, which is originated from the tradition of Saturnalia, an ancient Roman festival. As a multidisciplinary designer, when I learned that the 3D printer makes the traditionally impossible shapes possible, I decided to make my own Xmas tree ornament design and share it with my friends and family.

There are many astonishing 3D art works, films and games in the time of my childhood, and those amazing images were always had my heart impacted. But the threshold of generating 3D images are extremely high at that time.

Fortunately, During the time I studied in the University I met a professor in the department of architecture design, and he guided me into the field of 3D modeling. It was a mind-exploding moment when the first time I encountered this shockingly easy-to-use software, Sketch-Up, which can help me to build almost every shape and form I had in my mind. Soon, this tool became a very important part of my design process and, unexpectedly, everyday life.

Not long after I became a devotee of 3D modeling, I found a way to render high-fidelity image by using V-ray for Sketch-Up, and every image I generated was difficult for people around me to tell if it is an incredibly clean photo or a CGI. That experience gave me huge amount of satisfaction and confidence, and the 3D modeling and rendering since then are, instead of computer techniques, more like enjoyable computing activities in my daily life.

Many of my internationally awarded design works, such as “Dot” (red-dot design award Germany 2010 winner), “Bud” (selected and exhibited by iF design award Germany in 2011) and “Mad Evolution” (3rd Place in interactive - physical, ACM SIGGRAPH SpaceTime USA in 2009), are done by those 3D tools and it is unquestionable that I have not only the talent to think with 3-dimensional world, but also have the ability to turn intangible ideas in my mind into great pieces of design works.
